Before we dive into the health benefits of avocados and the countless ways you can serve them, let’s give some context to our title.

Depending on your age, you might remember a marketing campaign launched by the egg industry in 1976 with the memorable tagline, The Incredible Edible Egg.

And let’s face it, the egg earned – and continues to earn – that moniker. If nothing else, we tout the egg as a superfood within our personal chef services here at The Pickled Beet. After all, few other foods have survived as much onslaught of negative (and incorrect) “health” press through the years.

However, today we are dishing another incredible superfood onto your plate…

All hail to “The Incredible Edible Avocado.”

If you haven’t been hiding out in your bread bin for the past decade, there is no way you could escape that the avocado continues to be all the rage.

And it should be – it’s a versatile fruit you can slice, mash, or fill just about anything with to make it tastier.

Just try to step into a cafe, restaurant, or deli without viewing every imaginable type of avocado toast on the menu. From the simplest, mashed version with a drizzle of Extra Virgin olive oil served on wheat bread to rich Italian combinations – like cherry tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, thinly sliced basil, and olive oil with a balsamic vinegar reduction on bruschetta toast.

Drooling much?

You’d be hard-pressed to find a fruit with as many delectable ingredient mash-ups: pico de gallo, red onion, radishes, smoked salmon, cream cheese, cucumber, capers, and the list goes on.

And we’d be remiss not to mention that avocados are the main ingredient in one of America’s favorite dips – guacamole. Did you know that Americans typically consume about 13.2 million pounds of avocados during the Super Bowl? Add to that Cinco de Mayo and the Fourth of July, and you can understand why we purchase an abundant amount of avocados for our personal chef services.

Avocados are trendy with a capital “T,” and thankfully, since they are also a fantastic nutritional source, we’ll be obsessing over their luxurious taste for years to come.

The abundant health benefits of avocados.

No matter how you eat them, avocados serve as a reliable source of potassium (more than a banana, even), folate, heart-healthy monounsaturated fatty acids, fiber, antioxidants, and vitamins B5, B6, C, E, and K.

    • Need to lower your cholesterol levels, blood pressure and promote healthy eyes? Eat an avocado.
    • Want to feel fuller on fewer calories? Eat an avocado.
    • Need to keep your glucose and insulin levels steady? Eat an avocado.
    • Looking for a solution to your hair’s split ends? Grab an avocado and mix a homemade conditioner (ripe avocado, wheat germ, and jojoba oil).

Heads up: Just because avocado is in a recipe doesn’t necessarily mean it’s healthy – case in point, avocado margaritas. We’ll let you decide on that one.

How we select the perfect avocado for your personal chef services.

Avocados are a temperamental fruit, so selecting the perfect one can seem like an intimidating process to some. One minute, they are hard as a rock, and the next, you’re left with a mushy, bitter mess of ripeness.

When we select avocados for our personal chef services, we make it a point not to press in on the sides, indirectly bruising the green flesh we plan to include in whatever we prepare for you. So instead, we press on the top of the avocado – next to where you cut the stem. If that leaves a dent, we know the avocado is overly ripe, but if it “gives” just a bit and still retains its shape – it’s a winner.

Another tried and true method is to flick the “head” from the stem with your thumb. This reveals the color underneath and lets you check for mold. If it’s slightly yellow-green, go for it. If it doesn’t come off easily or is black or brown – leave it.

One thing we never do is purchase avocados in bulk. It’s important that we stagger ripeness for different client dishes throughout the week, but we sometimes need to ripen an avocado more quickly, so we place it in a paper bag on the counter.

Because we provide personal chef services for individuals, couples, and families like yours, we are always looking for the most flavorful, healthy ingredients to best fuel your body. We try to infuse the health benefits of avocados into many of our client recipes – including those who require autoimmune diet protocols. We have perfected how to both delight your palate and fulfill your nutritional requirements.
