For People With Food Allergies, Halloween Can Be A Very Scary Evening.
Trick or treating is scary for families dealing with food allergies. Whether the allergy is to gluten, dairy, nuts, or even multiple allergens, taking the kids door to door or to a party requires a good plan.
One good trick is to stock up on the treats that your little ones can have. Keep them handy just in case the only goodies given out are ones your kid can’t eat.
Gluten Ghouls
Many families deal with gluten allergy or intolerance. Here’s an exhaustive list of gluten-free treats to save you some time.
Dairy & Milk Monsters
Another common struggle is dairy allergy or intolerance. Here’s a shortlist of dairy-free candy, many of which also happen to be vegan.
Peanut & Tree Nut Trolls
Of course, nut allergies affect a very large population. Here’s a handy guide to nut-free treats.
And remember, regardless of specific food allergy, always double check the label on any foods you buy as ingredients may change.
Digital Defenses
There’s a growing trend that may prove helpful if you take your kids trick or treating on Halloween. Some of the phone apps used to connect neighbors (such as Nextdoor) let you search for or indicate street addresses that are handing out allergen-free treats.
The Magic of Teal Pumpkins
And one more thing: Have you heard of teal pumpkins? The Teal Pumpkin Project “encourages people to raise awareness of food allergies and promotes inclusion of all trick-or-treaters throughout the Halloween season.” This nationwide movement centers on giving out nonfood treats, such as small, inexpensive toys like temporary tattoos, vampire teeth, or glow sticks to avoid triggering a food allergy. Participants put out a teal-colored pumpkin in plain view to show that you’re giving out nonfood treats. What’s more—as with the Neighbors app—you can add your home to the Teal Pumpkin Project registry map.
